Literary Evening

Burns Supper

February Talk and Cèilidh

Good Wishes

Dates for Your Diaries

PLEASE NOTE that the Literary Evening planned for Saturday 21 April has been postponed and will now take place on Saturday 5 May.

Literary Evening

We are delighted that our former Chief, Calum Graham, has agreed to take the chair at our Literary Evening once again. The concept of the Literary Evening was introduced to the Society by Calum some years ago and we have enjoyed some outstanding events since then. I am sure this year will be no exception, as we welcome as our guest the author, local historian and broadcaster Calum Ferguson from Point in Lewis. Calum is known as a great raconteur with a vast knowledge of island tradition and Gaelic idiom. His publications in Gaelic and English include Children of the Black House, an account of island culture during the early 20th century through the eyes of his mother, Màiread, Hiort, acknowledged as one of the finest histories of St Kilda, and Suileabhan, the biography of a legendary Lewis 'hard case', of whom we will no doubt hear more from Calum himself.

Our singer for the evening will be Darren MacLean from Roag, Skye, Gold Medal winner at the 2003 Royal National Mod. Darren has distinguished himself again this year by reaching the final of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award. He is a grand nephew of the late Calum Kennedy and a nephew of Kristine Kennedy. Darren will also be leading a Gaelic song workshop in the afternoon.

The workshop (5.00 - 6.30pm), and the Literary Evening, at 7.30pm, take place in the Johnson Bar of Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub, Wine Office Court, 145 Fleet Street, London EC4 (tel. 020 7353 6170). The building is signposted from Fleet Street. The nearest tube is Blackfriars.

Tickets are priced at £15 each for the workshop and the Literary Evening (including buffet) and £22.50 for both workshop and Literary Evening.

This promises to be an excellent evening. To help us plan and cater please let our Hon Secretary, Tom Macaskill, know if you wish to attend, either by email to tommymaca@hotmail.com or by telephone on 020 7828 8978.

Burns Supper

This year's Supper was voted a great success and one of our best yet. Our thanks are due to Barry Gardiner, MP, for his very spirited "Address to the Haggis" and his thoughtful and well-researched "Immortal Memory". We were very pleased also to welcome loyal friends of the Society, Sandra and Ivan Leigh, who, along with Simon Gutteridge, provided the music for the evening. Special thanks to Alasdair Smith for piping in the haggis and to Christina MacDonald, Christina Aston and their helpers for providing and serving so efficiently the delicious meal.

February Talk and Cèilidh

Journalist Torquil Crichton's talk and response to questions on contemporary issues in Scotland were extremely well-received by a keen audience. We are very grateful to Torquil for such a stimulating talk and hope he will find time to visit us again before too long to update us on events.

We were delighted to have with us for her first London engagement Sìneag MacIntyre of South Uist, winner of the Ladies' Traditional Gold Medal at the 2006 Royal National Mod. In the afternoon Sìneag led a Gaelic song workshop and she later sang at the cèilidh. Sìneag's beautiful voice, relaxed style and infectious sense of humour were much admired and appreciated during both workshop and cèilidh. Thanks to our friends Kathy Kennedy, Sandy Jones, Anna MacRae and the workshop students for their contributions to the cèilidh.

Good Wishes

Our very best wishes go to our former Chief, Calum Graham, who is recovering from a heart attack. We are glad to hear that he is doing well and we look forward to seeing him next month at the Literary Evening.

We send our good wishes also to our Chief, Joyce Seymour-Chalk, who has been ill recently. We hope to have her back with us very soon.

Congratulations to Alasdair Smith and Margaret on the birth of their daughter, Alexandra.
