Annual General Meeting

The AGM will take place on Saturday 8 December 2007 at Crown Court Church of Scotland, Russell Street, Covent Garden at 7.30pm. Please note the change of date from 24 November. Nominations for Council should be sent by 30 November to our Hon Secretary, Tom Macaskill, Flat 1, Vincent House, Regency Street, London SW1P 4BX, or by email to tommymaca@hotmail.com

We are delighted that our old friend, Angus 'Monty' Montgomery, has agreed to return South to entertain us once again at a céilidh following the business meeting. We look forward very much to welcoming him back to the Society and to Crown Court. We can also promise some very special and exciting raffle prizes for this evening!

As usual, to help us plan and cater for the cèilidh, please let Tom Macaskill know if you wish to attend on 020 7828 8978 or by email as above.

Fundraising Evening

The cèilidh on 29 September in aid of the manuscript conservation appeal proved thoroughly enjoyable. Our guest, James Gunn, supported by Kathy Kennedy and Eòghann Pinkerton, created a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere and gave us a wonderful selection of old and new songs. James is the son of the late George Gunn, Stornoway, and the Gunn family has the rare distinction of father and son winning the Mod Gold Medal in consecutive years. James himself is a past winner in our schools conversation competition. We wish him all the very best with his singing career and feel sure he will have every success.

We are very grateful to everyone who has contributed to this appeal for the preservation of some of our earliest records, whether on the night or through donations at other times. With your help and the generosity of Bòrd na Gàidhlig we are now very close to our target of £1,000.

Gaelic Conversation Competition

Our Chief, Joyce Seymour-Chalk, writes:
There were some excellent conversations entered in this year's schools competition. A total of twenty-five schools from Glasgow, Inverness, Islay, Kingussie, Lochaber, Skye, Tiree and the Western Isles took part. Between the senior, junior and infant groups, one hundred and forty pupils competed. It was encouraging that the 'native speakers' section which was reintroduced to the senior, junior and infant fluent groups, attracted several entries, so it will remain a permanent feature of the competition.

The adjudicators spent three hectic, but rewarding days listening to these conversations. It was a pleasure to welcome two new members to the judging panel - Mary MacPhee and Norman MacLeod. I am grateful to them and to Norman MacKenzie, our Vice-President, for the hours of careful attention they gave to the entrants and for their help with deciding the winners, which is not always an easy task.

The schools that won the various trophies this year were:
Cuach Seirbheis nam Meadhanan Gaidhlig (Senior): Shawbost School
The Scottish Knights Templar Medallion (Junior): Back School
Cuach NicFhionghuinn (Infants): Back Primary School
Hugh Seymour-Chalk Salver (Learners): Lochaber High School

Congratulations to all our winners. A special mention for Back School who have won both the junior and infant trophies. Having won the infant trophy five years running, they now retain Cuach NicFhionghuinn. Many thanks to everyone who was involved with the competition. A great deal of time and effort is spent by teachers and pupils in order to enter. Given the standard from each school that we adjudicated, there are very positive signs for the future of Gaelic.

Tha sinn an dòchas gun toir sibh ath-oidhirp an ath-bhliadhna!

Good Wishes

We were delighted to get news that our former Chief, Calum Graham, is making excellent progress and feeling very well following major heart surgery in August. We send our best wishes to him and to Catherine and hope to see them in London again before too long.

Meallaibh Ur Naidheachd

Congratulations to Còisir Lunnainn's Ladies Choir and to their Gaelic tutor, Murdoch Graham, for achieving the award for the highest marks in Gaelic in their Mod competition. Sandy Jones also had a number of successes in the solo competitions, including winning the Kennedy-Fraser Cup for her song from 'Songs of the Hebrides'. In the literature competitions she came second with a new song put to music. Linn Phipps was placed second in the Silver Pendant competition. Meallaibh ur naidheachd gu dearbh!

Gaelic Service

A reminder that there will be a Gaelic service at Crown Court Church of Scotland on Sunday 9 December at 3.30pm. The minister will be Rev. Donald MacLennan (Rtd), Church of Scotland, Inverness (ex-Kinloch, Isle of Lewis).

Seachd: The Inaccessible Pinnacle

This new film featuring, among others, Angus Peter Campbell and Dolina MacLennan, and co-written by Aonghas 'Dubh' MacNeacail, is being promoted as the first genuine Gaelic feature film. It has been well-received by the critics and there are plans for a London screening on December 6 or 7 at the Ciné Lumière in Kensington if there is sufficient interest among the Gaelic community here. If you are interested, please contact Alice Heywood at alice.heywood@gmail.com. For further information see www.seachd.com.

Obituary

We were very sad to hear of the recent death of Peggy Goalen. Peggy had been ill for some years but many members and friends will remember meeting her at Gaelic services and at Society events with her daughter, Helen, who sang for us on several occasions. Peggy, from Lewis, was an elder at St Columba's Church of Scotland. The funeral service, conducted by Rev Barry W. Dunsmore, took place at Golders Green Crematorium. We offer Helen and her family our sincere sympathy.
