Society backing the London 2012 Olympics Bid Society's schools Gaelic competition E-petition for Gaelic broadcasting
Congratulations to Nick and Mairi Bastin
Mairi Bastin gave birth to Iona, sister to twins Lachlan and Islay. Joyce Seymour-Chalk hosts a special evening of literature at University College London on Saturday the 2nd of April at 8pm. Mr Donald McCormick, antiquarian books expert will talk to members about the Society's large books collection, which is part of the UCL Special Collections. Joyce has arranged for some of the rarer and in some cases, fragile books, to be displayed in glass cases. Mr McCormick will be pleased to answer questions following his talk. To coincide with the Gaelic Mass, the Society is holding a literary evening on the 7th of May, the Mass being on Sunday the 8th. Dr Martin MacIntyre's collection of 18 short stories, Ath-Aithne, will be introduced to the Society in a special evening of literature. The book also available on CD as a 'talking book' format will be brought to life with readings from some of the cast who recorded the book, including Simon MacKenzie. There will be a buffet supper with wine served. Tickets cost £15.
The Gaelic Mass, on Sunday the 8th of May will be at St. Mary Moorfield, Eldon Street, starting at 3pm. Father Calum MacLellan will conduct the mass and there will be a ceilidh with refreshments to follow. For more details contact Cathy Cook on 01277 658530. Tubes Liverpool Street / Moorgate.
The next service will be on Sunday the 22nd of May at 3.30pm in Crown Court Church of Scotland, Russell Street, Covent Garden. The Rev Prof John Macquarie PhD, DD University of Oxford. The 235th anniversary of the Society falls on the year 2012, the year London hopes to host the Olympics and Paralympics. The Society is encouraging our members to back the bid for our great city. Due to a works programme at Crown Court, events in July and August will now take place in St. Columba's in Pont Street. Events in May and June will remain at Crown Court. To facilitate the display of books for this coming Saturday, the event will be held in the Haldane Room at University College London, on Gower Street, the room is located near the main entrance (first left on entering the main door). If the works programme at Crown Court overruns we might have to move the September function, but in the meantime we must assume that they will finish on schedule. This year due to the popularity of the annual competition, the competitors from senior and junior schools will be judged separately. To avoid the busy exam times the senior schools have been brought forward. The results will be released together with the junior schools in time for school prizegivings in June. Joyce hope to mark the 25th anniversary of the completion next year with a special concert, drawing on some of the winners over the 25 years of the competition.
Some of you might have received an e-mail encouraging you to register your support for the introduction of a Gaelic Television Channel, the organisers intend to forward the petition to OFCOM the broadcasting regulator. Please support this move. www.petitiononline.com/craoladh
