Gaelic Weekend 7th and 8th of May
The weekend combines the literary day on the 7th with the Annual The weekend combines the literary day on the 7th with the Annual Gaelic Mass on the 8th.
To coincide with the Gaelic Mass, the Society is holding a literary evening on the 7th of May, the Mass being on Sunday the 8th. Dr Martin MacIntyre's collection of 18 short stories, Ath-Aithne, will be introduced to the Society in a special evening of literature. The book, also available on CD as a 'talking book' format, will be brought to life with readings from some of the cast who recorded the book, including Simon MacKenzie. There will be a buffet supper with wine served. Tickets cost £15. Iain MacDonald will be coming down with latest Gaelic books, so it will be a real literary feast.
The next service will be on Sunday the 22nd of May at 3.30pm in Crown Court Church of Scotland, Russell Street, Covent Garden. The Rev Prof John Macquarie PhD, DD University of Oxford.
June Ceilidh and Gaelic Song Class
Joyce Murray, double Mod Gold Medallist will be in London on Saturday the 11th of June. The song class will start at 5.00pm until 7.00pm, and the ceilidh starts at 7.30pm. The event takes place at Crown Court. Tickets for the ceilidh are £15 including a buffet supper and wine. July 16th Angus Peter Campbell, the Crowned Bard from South Uist will present an evening of prose from his latest novel and some of his published poetry. There is a possibility of a film screening , we will confirm this in the next issue of the newsletter.
August 20th Kenna Campbell, Mod Gold Medallist from the Isle of Skye, will present an evening of songs, featuring mouth music and other styles of singing.
The works programme at Crown Court is due for completion by the beginning of September. Our first event will be another Gaelic Weekend, this time featuring the Quarterly Gaelic Service. Professor Donald Meek will return, this time he will guide us through the world of lexicographer Edward Dwelly, on the Saturday and cater for our spiritual side on the Sabbath. We have been looking into the possibility of launching a range of Christmas cards using a photo image of the beautiful glass trophy for the Gaelic Society of London Award in memory of the late Ann S. Castle. We hope to be able to send a sample and order form by July.
Congratulations to and Stuart and LisaJane Cameron, son and new daughter-in-law of Archie and Sandra Cameron. Archie is the new Hon. Treasurer of the Society. The wedding took place in on the of 8th April at Crondon Park Golf Club in Stock, in Essex. If any of our members would like to join the Council of the Society at the next Annual General Meeting, please let us know. Our thanks to Joyce for a superb evening at University College London. Donald McCormick talked the audience through some of the rarer and more interesting books in the Society's collection. Ado Matheson lead the singing at the ceilidh that followed, singing a selection of his of own songs.
